Arranging Wedding Columns & Colonnades: How to Decorate for Your Big Day

Wedding columns and colonnades are a great way to enhance the visual appeal of your church, reception hall or other venue. The decisions you make when setting up the display will have a powerful impact on how the event looks to guests, so make sure you are doing it the right way to avoid a décor faux pas!

Choosing a Location

Find an area that has enough room for your columns and colonnade. This may require measuring floor space and ceiling height before you choose your event accessories. Also remember to look around the area for anything that may detract from the display or anything that could be a hazard.

For example, never block a doorway or a fire alarm. If a window is nearby, make sure the light will complement the display rather than ruin it when the photographer snaps pictures. This is especially important if the window faces the sun during the hours of your event. Not only can it ruin pictures, but it can also blind guests and cause them to look away.  Continue reading “Arranging Wedding Columns & Colonnades: How to Decorate for Your Big Day”

Wedding Columns: How to Choose the Perfect Style for Your Big Day

Wedding columns are an easy way to add more beauty and elegance to any event. There are many styles to choose from, so how do you know which will work best at your celebration?

Styles of Wedding Columns

Most wedding column styles are extremely versatile, which means they can be used at any kind of event. Some may blend better with certain types of décor than others. For example, the Empire column is breathtaking and includes gentle grooves and regal display caps. The classic visual appeal of the Empire model is usually better suited to traditional décor styles.

If you prefer modern décor, then the Tuscan or metal columns may be a better choice. The metal version is very sleek yet still retains the elegance that wedding columns are known for. The Tuscan version is smooth which allows it to complement both modern and traditional styles. Continue reading “Wedding Columns: How to Choose the Perfect Style for Your Big Day”

Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland & Virginia
If you’re lucky enough to get married at the right time (end of July!), you could take your honeymoon on Assateague Island during the annual Pony Penning festivities. The ponies, most likely the descendants of Spanish shipwreck survivors, are herded across the Assateague Channel during the Chincoteague Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival. The size of the herd is limited to 150 ponies so, after being checked by a veterinarian, each year most of the foals are sold at an auction benefiting the volunteer fire company. Choosing the Wedding Cake that Fits You!

Although the tradition of the wedding cake has been around since medieval times, the modern wedding cake didn’t appear until 1882 at the wedding of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany. In ancient Rome, the cake—which was actually bread—was crumbled over the head of the bride and groom for good fortune. Luckily, we’ve come a long way since then! The cake for Prince Leopold’s wedding was the first to be completely edible and featured the tiers that we are familiar with today. But what if you don’t want a traditional wedding cake? We have a few fun “out-of-the-box” ideas for you! Continue reading “Choosing the Wedding Cake that Fits You!”

5 Romantic Wedding Traditions from Around the World

We all know the romantic wedding traditions in America, from jointly cutting the cake to the sweetheart table, but if you’re looking to mix things up a bit there are many traditions from around the world you can incorporate into your ceremony! We’ve chosen five to feature this week, but there are hundreds to choose from.

An interesting variation of the bouquet toss comes from Peru. Wedding charms are placed between the layers of the wedding cake with ribbons attached. Prior to cutting the cake, unattached female guests pull the charms out. The idea is that the woman who pulls out the wedding ring charm will be the next to marry!

In Russia, grooms pay a ransom for their brides. At the start of a traditional Russian wedding ceremony, the groom will arrive at his bride’s residence and ask for her. Her family will then have a bit of fun asking him for gifts and making him complete silly tasks. He may have to tell jokes, perform funny dances or solve riddles. But it doesn’t stop there! After enduring their teasing, the bride’s family will often bring out a different family member disguised as her. The groom will then have to pay still more ransom to get to his actual bride! Once her family is satisfied, the ceremony moves forward, but watch out! The bride (or her shoe!) can be stolen again during the reception and require still more ransom to be returned to the groom. Lights, Camera, Action! Planning A Wedding is a Lot Like Making a Movie

READY!

A wedding is like a movie in a lot of ways. First and foremost are the stars of the show, our leading actors, the bride and groom. As in a movie, the wedding is the story about them and their lives.

Next are the supporting actors, the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Their role, just like in the movies, is to support the bride and groom; in essence, to make them look good. Of course, every film has a director (the wedding planner), a production team, (the mother, the mother-in-law, the clergy, the photographer, the caterer, the florist) and finally, a set (the church, the hall, an outdoor pavilion, the beach). Today, I want to talk to you about the set. Continue reading “Lights, Camera, Action! Planning A Wedding is a Lot Like Making a Movie”

What Everyone Needs to Know About Planning a Retro Wedding

Have you ever seen a vintage wedding that you just didn’t get? I have seen weddings that were intended to be “retro” or “vintage” but I just couldn’t tell for the life of me what era they were even going for. Simply wearing your mother’s wedding dress does not make your wedding vintage. If you aren’t careful, you will simply end up with a “dated” wedding, out-of-style, no character, and nothing that anyone will remember.

If you are planning a vintage wedding it is very important that you:

1. Learn everything that you can about your era and theme.

2. Keep your decor true to that era.

3. Plan activities for your even that fit in and were popular during that era.

4. Go all out with your theme without going overboard. Continue reading “What Everyone Needs to Know About Planning a Retro Wedding”
